Getting a detailing business found beyond Instagram
Detailing is a visual trade, so the whole industry lives on Instagram. It is a good place to show work and a poor place to be found by somebody who does not already follow you. The search side is usually wide open, which is exactly why it is worth taking.
The Instagram-only problem
An Instagram profile does three things badly for discovery: it is hard for search engines to read, it gives an AI assistant almost nothing quotable, and it belongs to somebody else. If the account goes down or the algorithm shifts, the business's entire presence goes with it.
None of that is an argument for abandoning Instagram. Keep posting — it is where the work looks best. The argument is that it should not be the only thing that exists.
What decides who gets recommended
- Google Business Profile, claimed and complete, with correct categories. Mobile detailers in particular need service areas set properly or they appear in one postcode instead of a whole metro.
- Recent reviews. Detailing is a considered purchase from a stranger who will have your car for hours. Recent, specific reviews carry the trust.
- Written pages about specific services — ceramic coating, paint correction, interior detail, fleet work. Most enquiries are for a specific service, and an engine can only match you to it if the words exist somewhere readable.
- Before-and-after work with real text around it, not just an image grid.
Why this trade is winnable quickly
Two reasons. First, the field is uncompetitive on search — nearly every detailer is competing on Instagram and almost none have done the local groundwork. Second, the jobs are high enough in value that a handful of extra enquiries a month is a real difference, and repeat-and-referral rates are high, so each new customer is worth more than one job.
What we do
- Google Business Profile claimed, categorised, service areas correct.
- A site on your own domain with your work, your services, and booking.
- Review requests automated after each job.
- Structured data and service pages engines can read.
- Citations that agree across directories.
We do not write reviews or buy them. The FTC Rule on Consumer Reviews and Testimonials (16 CFR Part 465) has been in force since October 2024, and the penalties land on the business owner, not the agency. What works is asking every real customer, every time, automatically.
How we measure it
We run twenty real buyer questions for your market past ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, three times each. Twenty questions, four engines, three runs is 240 checks. Three runs because these answers vary between runs, and a single check cannot tell a business that gets recommended reliably from one that got named once by luck. That first run is a baseline; the same questions are re-run every month against the same engines, so movement is comparable instead of a moved goalpost.
We do not guarantee any engine will recommend you. Nobody can. No engine sells placement and none publish how they rank. What we do is improve the signals they demonstrably read, then measure it monthly and report it whether it moved or not.
Questions we get asked
I get all my work from Instagram. Why change?
Do not change it — add to it. Instagram reaches people who already found you. Search reaches people looking right now who have never heard of you. They are different audiences and the second one is currently going to whoever did the groundwork.
I'm mobile, I don't have a shop address. Does that break Google?
No. Google supports service-area businesses and you can hide the address while still covering a defined region. Getting that configuration right is one of the most common fixes for mobile detailers who think they simply cannot rank.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no threshold, but recency matters more than total. A steady trickle of recent reviews outperforms a larger number that all stopped two years ago.
