What happened in August 2026
Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged 3.83% between 18 July and 7 August. By 14–17 August it was 0.52%. That is an 86% relative drop, and it happened inside about four days.
The measurement comes from Promptwatch, which tracks citations across engines continuously. It was picked up by Forbes, Search Engine Land and Axios.
Reddit share of citations, measured by Promptwatch
| 18 Jul – 7 Aug | 14 – 17 Aug | |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | 3.83% | 0.52% |
| Relative change, ChatGPT | — | −86% |
| Google AI Overviews | — | −11% |
| Google AI Mode | — | −30% |
Note the second half of that table. This is a ChatGPT event. Reddit did not disappear from AI search — it dropped sharply in one engine and mildly in the others.
Three things this is not
It is not "15% down to zero." That figure has circulated widely on social media over the past week and it is roughly four times the real starting share. The measured numbers are 3.83% and 0.52%. If you are repeating this to a client, repeat the real ones.
It is not an explained event. Promptwatch is explicit that its data shows when a change happened, not why, and says a data-collection issue on its own side cannot be fully ruled out. OpenAI has not commented. Search Engine Journal published a piece specifically on the gaps in the explanation.
It is not proof of a deliberate policy. ChatGPT did begin using the site: operator at scale on 8 August, with domain-scoped queries jumping from 0.37% to 16.8% of background searches. But Reddit's citations held for another six days after that. The timing is suggestive. It is not causation, and anyone presenting it as causation is guessing.
What this changes for a local business
Almost nothing, and that is the point worth understanding.
Reddit citations matter enormously if you sell software. The consideration set for a B2B tool genuinely lives on Reddit, G2 and Capterra, and an engine answering "best helpdesk software" has been reaching for those threads for two years.
Nobody picks a plumber that way. When somebody asks an assistant for a house cleaner in Cincinnati or a heavy-haul carrier in Dayton, the engine is reading Google Business Profiles, review recency, the business's own service pages, and local directories. It was doing that before August and it is doing it now.
So no client of ours lost anything in that four-day window. Not because we predicted an OpenAI change — we did not — but because the model was never built on a surface somebody else controls.
What we did and did not change
Did not change: the four things that make up the actual programme. Google Business Profile completeness. Review recency and response. Structured data joining a business into one resolvable entity. Service and location pages that answer the questions people actually ask an assistant. None of those live on a platform that can revoke them.
Did change: forum and directory seeding has been demoted from a headline deliverable to a supporting one. It still works, particularly in Google's surfaces, and it is cheap. It is no longer something we would let a client's visibility depend on, and we say so before the engagement starts rather than after an engine changes its mind.
The monthly 240-test simulation is what makes this legible at all. When a citation source moves, it shows up in the next run as a change in where answers are coming from. Without a measurement running continuously, a shift like this one is invisible until a client asks why the phone stopped ringing.
How to check your own exposure
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the question a customer would actually type — the service plus your city, not your business name. Then look at what each answer cites.
If the sources are your own website, your Google Business Profile and your reviews, you own your visibility. If they are a directory, a forum thread or a review aggregator you have no control over, you are renting it, and August is a reasonable preview of what renting looks like when the landlord changes the locks without notice.
There is no clever way around this. The durable version of AI visibility is a business that has published enough clear, specific, structured information about itself that an engine does not need a third party to describe it.
